I have a vacuum sealer and I want to cook rice seal it and take it on extended pack trips where there will be no refrigeration. This will help cut down on fuel.
Trader Joes, Kashi, Uncle Bens, etc… sell bags of cooked rice this way. Does anyone know if this is safe to do it yourself or are they adding a preservative?
I would also like to do this with cooked lentils and beans? any suggestions.
How safe is it to then boil bags to reheat. Is there BPA in the plastic?
If I can reheat in plastic, it reduces any clean up and gives me drinkable water or hot tea! Again reducing fuel.
Thank you for an tips or suggestion.

I have read where vacuum sealing ammo can cause damage to the primers and actually unseat the bullets, is this true? I used our Food Saver Sealer to seal some .223 ammo today. I sealed it in the boxes, 2 boxes per bag, the seal got real tight.

Hi
I am attempting to make some home made MRE’s for long-term preparedness storage.
They will consist mainly of dried goods (pre-flavoured rice / pasta / noodles etc) plus some candy bars, tea, coffee etc.
Assuming that the shortest lifespan (sell-by date) is on the candy bar – lets say 1.5 years – how much could that lifespan be increaced if all the food is sealed into a single bag using a vacuum sealer machine? and stored at the following temps:
room temp
refrigerated
frozen
thanks in advance

My husband’s brother has one and swears by it but I’ve heard conflicting evidence.
Some say the cost of the bags makes it not worth it, others say it doesn’t work that great or it’s a pain to use.
Any experience with these things? Kohl’s has one on sale for $59.99 with 10 bucks back that is regularly 139 (so they claim). It comes with two canisters as well.
Worth it or not?
Help us decide.
Thanks for you help!

bags properly. I brought it back, with purchase receipt and they will not refund because I can’t find the operating instructions. They say it is not a complete unit unless the instructions are with it!! They also said original packaging was needed too. I have now lost $99 and have a useless product. Has anyone else had the same trouble, if so what did you do? If you kept the packaging for every product you bought you would need an extra room to store it all for goodness sake. (this is in Australia)

I am wondering if a vacuum sealer like the Food Saver or the Rival Seal-a-Meal can be used to seal regular plastic bags. I don’t necessarily need the air to be vacuumed out but I want to be able to reseal stuff like pepperoni or hotdogs or stuff from the freezer like chicken fingers etc (in their original packaging).
Has anyone tried this? I would not imagine it would not damage the sealer (as long as the plastic is thick enough).

My bf and I are moving across the country (2,600miles) and we are only taking one car and a top carrier for it. I would like to vacuum seal all of our clothes, blankets, towels, etc.
Is there a good way to make my own vacuum seal bags, maybe out of big garbage bags?
Has anyone ever done this, or used the already made ones to get more room in your car?

I know that when you use the bags, the air is replaced by the bag, but what replaces the air when you suck it out of the container?
